Factors Associating with Benefit of Workers¡¯ Compensation among Injured Workers in Korea
Park Ji-Eun

Abstract
Objective: The purpose of study was to examine the size of non take up of workers¡¯ compensation (WC) and factors associated with non take-up of WC.

Methods: The Korean Health Panel data (YR 2008-2012) were analyzed with including 740 injured workers aged 20 and over. The logit analysis was performed after excluding injured workers who had no information on working status.

Results: Empirical results showed that approximately 17.3% of total injured workers and 25.6% of injured paid-workers received WC, respectively. Socioeconomic status of injured workers was lower than general Korean population. Low-educated workers and workers who utilized emergency and/or were hospitalized likely to be treated by WC. In perspective of working status, unpaid workers were less likely to be recipients of WC compared to regular workers and workers in secondary or tertiary industry were likely to be received benefit from WC compared to workers in primary industry.

Conclusion: Current study provides empirical evidence regarding the size of non take up of WC and factors associated with non take up of WC among injured workers in Korea. Non take up of WC is associated with working environment as well as an individual choice. Therefore, policy makers should consider these factors.
